Interview tips

Short, practical and written for the interviews people actually sit in India — a shop floor, an accounts department, a small office above a showroom.

Before you go

  • Two printed copies of your resume, even when you emailed it.
  • Aadhaar or PAN, your last payslip and any certificate you listed.
  • The recruiter’s name and number saved in your phone.
  • Check the address the evening before, not on the morning.

The first five minutes

  • Reach ten minutes early. Not thirty, not late.
  • Greet, sit when asked, put the phone on silent in front of them.
  • “Tell me about yourself” wants sixty seconds: what you do now, what you have done, why this role.

When salary comes up

Give a range, not a single number, and tie it to what you are paid now.

  • “I am on ₹24,000 in hand. For this role I am looking at ₹28,000 to ₹32,000.”
  • Say in hand or CTC — be clear which one you mean.
  • If they push for one number, name the lower end of your range and stop talking.

The questions that always come

  • Why are you leaving? — Answer forward, never about a person.
  • What is your notice period? — Give a date, not “immediately if needed”.
  • Walk me through your day. — Name the software and the volume you handle.
  • A mistake you made. — One real one, and what you changed after it.

Ask them something

  • Who will I report to, and how big is the team?
  • What does a good first three months look like?
  • Is the salary in hand or CTC, and when is payday?
  • Is this a replacement or a new position?

After it ends

  • Message the same evening: thank them, repeat your interest, one line.
  • No answer in four working days? One polite follow-up. Then move on.
  • Keep applying until an offer letter is in your hand.

Phone and video rounds

  • Take the call standing, somewhere quiet, with the job open in front of you.
  • For video: face a window, test the mic once, keep a notepad off-camera.
  • If the line breaks, call back — do not wait to be chased.

Protect yourself

  • No genuine employer asks for money for a job, training or a “file charge”.
  • Never hand over original documents.
  • Offer in writing before you resign from your current job.
  • Anything that smells wrong — report it to us, it is free.
